Independent Doesn’t Mean Insignificant: The Impact of Live Entertainment in Illinois

Independent live entertainment doesn’t just move culture — it moves our economy.

Here at the nonprofit-owned and operated Egyptian Theatre, we’re proud to be part of a powerful network of independent venues across Illinois that bring people together through live experiences while fueling major economic growth statewide.

According to the newly released State of Live report from the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), the independent live entertainment sector in Illinois is an economic powerhouse. Collectively, independent venues and promoters:

  • Add $3.9 billion to the Illinois economy
  • Contribute $2.3 billion to the state’s GDP
  • Support 9,988 jobs
  • Pay $1.3 billion in wages
  • Drive $559.6 million in off-site tourism spending

These numbers prove what many already know — independent doesn’t mean small. It means local, passionate, community-driven, and essential.

And right here in downtown DeKalb, the Egyptian Theatre stands as a shining example of that impact. Each season, the Theatre welcomes over 50,000 patrons from across the region, state and country to enjoy concerts, comedy, film, dance, and community events. Those visitors don’t just come for the show — they also dine at local restaurants, stay in nearby hotels, and shop at local stores.

In fact, a recent analysis shows that the Egyptian Theatre generates an estimated $3.1 million in local economic impact each year according to the Arts & Economic Prosperity calculator from the Americans for the Arts . That’s money staying right here in our community — supporting jobs, small businesses, and the continued growth of our downtown.

As a nonprofit organization, we take immense pride in the role we play not only as a cultural cornerstone but also as an economic catalyst. Every ticket purchased, every show attended, and every partnership formed helps ensure that independent live entertainment — and the communities it uplifts — continue to thrive.

Independent doesn’t mean insignificant. It means impactful.
