The Egyptian Theatre has earned national recognition as one of America’s Top 9 Most Beautiful Historic Movie Theatres, according to a recent feature by Architectural Digest, placing the beloved DeKalb landmark alongside some of the country’s most celebrated historic movie palaces.
Originally opened in 1929 during the height of America’s fascination with ancient Egypt, the Egyptian Theatre is one of only a handful of Egyptian-style theatres remaining in the United States and the only one east of the Rocky Mountains. Its richly detailed architecture, colorful murals, ornate décor, and atmospheric auditorium have captivated audiences for nearly a century.
The recognition by Architectural Digest celebrates not only the theatre’s architectural beauty, but also the remarkable preservation efforts that have ensured its survival.
Following its closure in the late 1970s, local residents rallied to save the historic building. Preservation of Egyptian Theatre, Inc., a nonprofit organization, purchased the theatre in 1978 and has since overseen decades of restoration and stewardship. Today, the Egyptian Theatre continues to serve as a nonprofit performing arts center, hosting concerts, films, educational programming, community events, and cultural celebrations throughout the year.
“This recognition is an incredible honor for our theatre and for the entire DeKalb community,” said Alex Nerad, Executive Director of the Egyptian Theatre. “Our volunteers, members, donors, patrons, staff, and community partners have worked together to preserve this extraordinary landmark while ensuring it remains a vibrant gathering place for people of all ages. To see the Egyptian Theatre recognized on a national stage is a testament to what a community can accomplish when it believes in preserving its history.”
As the Egyptian Theatre approaches its 100th anniversary in 2029, the recognition serves as a reminder that historic theatres continue to play an important role in enriching their communities. While visitors are often drawn to the building’s striking architecture, it is the experiences inside—from live performances and classic films to school programs and community celebrations—that continue to make the theatre a treasured destination.
The Egyptian Theatre remains owned and operated by Preservation of Egyptian Theatre, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the historic landmark while providing arts, entertainment, and educational opportunities for the Northern Illinois region.
