Backstage at the Egyptian: Shauna Stevens on DeKalb’s Roper Romp

We’re thrilled to present an exclusive interview with Shauna Stevens, the driving force behind the Roper Romp, which will be making its debut in DeKalb for the very first time this year on Saturday, September 21st! In this interview, conducted by our Marketing Intern, Tori Smith, Shauna shares her excitement about bringing this unique event to our community. Learn more about the event’s origins, the planning process, and what attendees can look forward to as the Roper Romp kicks off in DeKalb.

TORI: Could you tell us more about The Roper Romp and how the community can get involved?
SHAUNA: “Roper Romp” started in 2013 in New Orleans when a bunch of women decided to dress up as Three’s
Company’s, Helen Roper and walk the Mardi Gras parade. Since then, all sorts of towns have been
holding events, fundraisers, and bar crawls just for fun! Women from all over in their caftans (Moo Moos),
red curly wig hair, big beaded gaudy jewelry, and oversized glasses. Anyone can throw a Roper Romp at
any time, for any reason.

T: What is your favorite part about the Roper Romp?
S: Seeing the excitement of all the local business owners. The women love this. All the positive feedback from people. This brings empowerment to women
and sisterhood. We have Helen’s coming in on motorcycles.

T: How did you get involved with the Roper Romp?
S: My wife said, “I want to go to a Roper Romp!” I replied, “We are going to throw one!” (I am a recent graduate of Leadership Academy and also threw Kickoff for
Pride in the 815.)

T: What do you hope the community takes away from this event?
S: Growing Dekalb. I have asked all business owners to give me the total sales from the day so we can see what we brought into DeKalb.
This will bring women together—retail therapy, laughter, and smiles! The community of Helen’s will know what businesses are here. What we offer. The whole point of this was
because I have heard one of my favorite stores downtown talk about needed help and not getting it. This is also about ME, personally giving back to the community.
We were just approved for Sycamore Pumpkin Fest to walk as Helen Ropers! Next year, we will be catering toward the men in the community!
