Backstage at the Egyptian: Nick Tirey of That Arena Rock Show

Big hair, bigger guitars, and the anthems that defined a generation—That Arena Rock Show is bringing the full arena experience to the Egyptian Theatre stage this Saturday, March 28 at 7:30 PM. Designed as more than just a tribute, the show celebrates the biggest moments of ‘70s and ‘80s rock with high-energy performances, over-the-top theatrics, and the hits everyone knows by heart. Ahead of their DeKalb stop, Egyptian Theatre Marketing Intern Myah Mackey connected with Nick Tirey to talk about what makes the show unique, life on the road, and why audiences can expect a nonstop party from the moment the lights go down.

MYAH: For someone who’s never experienced a live That Arena Rock Show, how would you describe the vibe in three words?
NICK: Hits, Energy, Theatrics

M: What inspired you to create a show centered around the arena rock experience rather than just a traditional tribute performance?
N: When we put this show together, we didn’t want to pay tribute to just one band. We wanted to celebrate all of our favorite bands and moments from the 70’s / 80s arena rock era.

Our goal was to take the most iconic moments from the biggest shows—the guillotine, the smoking guitar, smashing guitars, over-the-top theatrics, and unforgettable pop culture moments—and pack them all into one high-energy production.

All of it is backed by an incredible soundtrack made up of the massive rock anthems you heard blasting on the radio, the songs that defined an era and filled arenas around the world. We wanted to design a show that you would not only want to listen to, but you would want to experience.

M: What’s one behind-the-scenes moment from touring that fans would never expect?
N: There are so many. And now a lot of them are being put in our monthly VLOGS on our YouTube channel haha.

Most people probably don’t realize how much travel and preparation goes into making our shows and weekends successful. We have an incredible team of people, the band, crew, drivers etc that all have a can do attitude and want to make every show as successful as possible. For example, we had a tire blow out on our box truck one night traveling down to Florida. Our driver quickly found a truck stop and was fixed and back on the road in less than an hour. We also have another guy that just got home from being out with our box truck for 3 weeks straight so that we could fly in and out of the shows. Crazy thing was he was happy to do it. Those guys are the true heroes for making sure we get from point a to point b safely and can have time in between our shows to relax etc.

M: What can DeKalb audiences expect the moment the lights go down?
N: It will be a non stop party from the first note to the last note. We look at it as we will bring the tunes and the entertainment and we want everyone in the crowd to have the best night of their life singing, dancing, smiling and forgetting about the stress and chaos that this world can bring for a couple of hours.
