Many talented musicians call the DeKalb area home, and Hometown Renaissance Band is no exception. The quartet features Ron Lofton singing and playing guitar and ukulele, Chris Cochran on guitar and harmonica, Lynn Vogl playing flute and viola, and Sean Freeman on the bass. Composed of three retired public service workers and a music educator, the band members have long been engaged with the local community. Before welcoming them for their next appearance during the Live Lunch series, Egyptian Theatre marketing intern AJ Evon spoke to Ron Lofton about the band.
AJ: Hometown Renaissance Bands’ sound has been described as Baroque Pop. What initially inspired this style?
Ron: Baroque Pop combines pop and rock music with elements of classical music. The unique selection includes songs from the 60s and 70s that were part of the soundtrack of our lives.
AJ: What can unfamiliar audience members expect to hear during the event?
R: Some examples include The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” or The Left Banke’s “Walk away Renee.”
AJ: The band has previously performed with the Egyptian Theatre during Corn Fest, along with various other DeKalb spots. What is your favorite part about performing for local audiences?
R: We enjoy playing for local audiences because this is our hometown. And we love the support from our neighbors, friends, and family.
AJ: How does the live lunch series compare to typical performances?
R: The live lunch venue is a great outdoor place to play. It’s more laid back, with a lot of things for people to see, some fresh produce to buy, and some good food to try.
AJ: What piece of advice would you give any aspiring musicians or performers in the crowd?
R: My advice for aspiring musicians is to find your passion and practice. Build your confidence by playing for family and friends. Then get out there and perform
