Backstage at the Egyptian: Jessica Wexell, Egyptian Theatre Board Member

The Egyptian Theatre is proud to shine a spotlight on one of its newest board members, Jessica Wexell — a passionate advocate for accessibility and inclusion in our community. In this Backstage at the Egyptian interview, Marketing Intern Juli Reyes chats with Jessica about her role as Community Engagement Coordinator at RAMP, her dedication to creating inclusive spaces, and what inspired her to join the Egyptian Theatre Board. From her 16 years of work with the disability community to her excitement about helping the theatre remain a welcoming place for all, Jessica brings a wealth of experience and heart to the organization’s ongoing mission to connect, inspire, and include.

JULI: Can you tell us a little about yourself?
JESSICA: I grew up in Central Illinois and attended Illinois State University before moving to DeKalb in 2014. I’ve spent the past 16 years working with the disability community, which has been such a rewarding part of my life. I married my husband on October 2, 2021, and we share our home with my 13-year-old stepdaughter, our dog Ludo, and our cat Bowie. In my free time, I enjoy watching documentaries and spending time with my family.

JULI: What is your role at RAMP as community engagement coordinator?
JESSICA: I am RAMP’s Community Engagement Coordinator, which means I get to connect with our community every day to promote inclusion and accessibility. I collaborate with local organizations, schools, and businesses to provide education, build partnerships, and make sure people with disabilities have equal opportunities to participate in all aspects of community life. I also help spread awareness about RAMP’s mission and programs through events, outreach, and advocacy efforts.

JULI: What inspired you to be a part of a non-profit whose mission is focused on inclusivity?
JESSICA: I’ve always believed everyone deserves to feel included and valued. Working in the disability community inspired me to join a nonprofit that focuses on breaking barriers, building understanding, and empowering people to live full, independent lives.

JULI: What does it mean for you to be a board member for the Egyptian Theatre?
JESSICA: I’ve had the pleasure of working with the Egyptian Theatre over the years, and they have always been committed to making their space and programs accessible for everyone. When I was invited to join the board, I was so excited, it’s a chance to continue working with an organization I admire while helping ensure the theatre remains inclusive and welcoming to all.

JULI: What are the goals you hope to achieve as a new board member?
JESSICA: I’m excited to build relationships with the other board members and learn from their experiences. I want to better understand how the theatre runs behind the scenes and contribute to making sure it continues to be accessible and welcoming to everyone. I hope to use my background in community engagement to support the theatre’s mission while working with the board to help it thrive as a vibrant, inclusive space for the whole community.
