Backstage at the Egyptian: Denise Salihoglu talks Prom Rewind 2

The Egyptian Theatre is excited to once again play host to Prom Rewind 2, an outstanding benefit for Barb Food Mart. Discover the impactful work of Barb Food Mart and its mission to combat food insecurity in the DeKalb community in this insightful interview done by our Marketing Intern, Pamela, with Denise Salihoglu, the Director of Barb Food Mart.

PAMELA: Could you tell us about Bard Food Mart and the services it provides to the community?
DENISE: Barb Food Mart is a food pantry that serves students and families in DeKalb School
District 428. We promote dignity, equity and choice while reducing food insecurity and
increasing access to community resources. The pantry serves around 230 families a
week out of the Garden Street location. Additionally, we operate two satellite pantries-
one at DeKalb High School and one at Malta Elementary. To use Barb Food Mart, you
have to have a child in the DeKalb School District.

P: How can community members support and become involved with Bard Food Mart?
D: Community members can head to www.barbfoodmart.com to sign up to volunteer, donate, or register as a Barb Food Mart Family.

P: What does it mean to Barb Food Mart to have the historic Egyptian Theatre host Prom
Rewind for its second year?
D: We love to collaborate with the Egyptian Theatre. We believe the Egyptian Theatre
aligns with the mission of Barb Food Mart. It is a beautiful venue, and the perfect place
to host Prom Rewind for the second year! The Egyptian Theatre supports local
organizations and the community and we are so happy to partner with them.

P: What are you most looking forward to for this year’s Prom Rewind?
D: I’m excited to see who wins Prom King and Queen this year! I’m also looking forward to
seeing all my friends dressed up.

P: Why do you think it is important to have events such as Prom Rewind in the community?
D: We’re so happy to provide an opportunity for people to come together and dance and have a wonderful time at the beautiful, historic Egyptian Theatre. Maybe you didn’t have the high school prom of your dreams, or maybe you’re looking to recreate an excellent memory (or a brand new memory!) It’s just a fun way to show support for Barb Food Mart and the families we serve.

P: What do you hope attendees take away from this event?
D: It’s amazing to be able to bring attention to Barb Food Mart while also having fun and
dancing the night away. I hope folks in the community will remember Barb Food Mart
and advocate for our families. When we send children to school with full bellies, ready to
learn, they can achieve higher successes in the classroom.
