At the heart of every show at the Egyptian Theatre is a dedicated group of volunteers who help make the magic happen. From greeting guests to supporting operations behind the scenes, their impact is felt in every corner of the theatre. In honor of National Volunteer Week, Egyptian Theatre Marketing Intern Myah Mackey sat down with House Manager Brooklynn Gosnell to talk about what makes the theatre’s volunteer community so special, the connections formed along the way, and why giving your time can be just as rewarding as experiencing the show itself.
MYAH: How do you recruit volunteers here at the Egyptian Theatre and what do you think makes them want to stay?
BROOKLYNN: Recruiting volunteers here at the Egyptian Theatre happens in a few ways. Sometimes, people who just regularly come to our shows are so in love with what we do here that they are also eager to volunteer and join in the fun. Other times, a friend of a volunteer will come to us and say they heard good things and also want to help support the community. And once they start volunteering with us, it’s easy to stick with it! We offer flexible scheduling that is self-assigned, and the energy is always so good at the Egyptian Theatre it keeps bringing people back to us.
M: In your opinion, what is the best part about working with volunteers here?
B: The best part about working with volunteers here at the Egyptian Theatre is hearing so many different stories and meeting people from all walks of life. We have so many friendly faces here, young and old and from all backgrounds, that each shift working with volunteers is unique and special. I’m always hearing personal stories or community anecdotes that help me see the world through someone else’s eyes and it keeps my job fresh and interesting, while also learning so much more about the people in my community!
M: How do you think volunteering affects the lives of those who partake in it often, especially volunteering here at the theatre?
B: Volunteering undoubtably makes someone’s life more meaningful and interesting. Being able to say you donate your time regularly to a cause much bigger than yourself helps fulfill a greater sense of self purpose. Volunteering at the theatre again and again gives you a sense of belonging and allows you to focus on the bigger picture of community, while also just getting you out of the house!
M: What advice would you give to current or future volunteers?
B: My advice to current or future volunteers is to just keep at it! Whether you volunteer now with us and love it, or you’re just seeking out something new that seems interesting, just keep at it. Whether you’re only here once a year, or you’re here once a week, your efforts and attendance as a volunteer makes a huge difference here at the Egyptian Theatre and we quite literally couldn’t operate and fulfill our mission statement as a nonprofit without our volunteers!
